My Story
Alex Akwasi Boateng is a managing director at Alexiboat Production. Alex started as a distributor by importing video cassettes from Asia in 1985 for business. Alex worked with several producers nationwide, eventually creating distribution lines in the Ghana Film Industry. Although Alex employed several video formats for business, the producers submitted their films in Betacam or U-matic, and Alex converted these formats to VHS for distribution. Although the profit margin was slim, Alex had no competitors and was able to establish three offices in Kumasi.
After the spike in conventional cinemas dropped, Alex decided to buy video cassette tapes directly from the companies. He failed in his first attempt to negotiate with Lucky Go Star in Asia. He tried again with a company in Germany, BASF and this time, he succeeded in reaching a video cassette sales agreement with BASF. Alex and Alexiboat partnered with audio cassette distributors to boost their sales. In the 90s, Alex and his company distributed about 90% of the film in Ghana. Alex distributed Ghanaian films in the UK, the US, and Germany. Alex’s most significant challenge was fighting piracy, but partnering with BASF helped a great deal in putting up measures to fight piracy. In 1998, Alex transitioned from VHS to DVDs by importing DVD players into the country and selling them cheaply. Alex and Alexiboat influenced a lot of producers to produce films in the Ghanaian local language.
